Wellth: It pays to be healthy

Wellth was designed in response to a tragic situation in the life of our CEO and Co-Founder, Matthew Loper. 

When his aunt and uncle were both diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Matt watched as they each responded in two radically different ways. His aunt was able to quickly and easily adjust her lifestyle to accommodate the diagnosis — zealously taking her medications everyday, watching her diet, and monitoring her glucose. His uncle repeatedly fell off his care plan, no matter how hard he tried. The result? His aunt now lives a healthy life while his uncle endured a lifetime of complications from the disease and ultimately passed away. 

The question of how two people with the same condition can have two vastly different outcomes — even among siblings with the same genetics and upbringing — is at the heart of Wellth.

Why do people behave the way they do?

To answer this question, we had to understand how someone could have the knowledge of their disease and the resources to manage it, but would still not follow the care plan. 

This lead us to studying and understanding classical vs. behavioral economics:

  • Classical economics states that if you arm people with the right information, they will make decisions in their best interest. 
  • Behavioral economics understands that human beings make irrational decisions every day, despite having all the information at their fingertips. 

I’m sure all of us can relate to making a plan to eat healthy, exercise and drink water every day, but then life gets in the way of acting on those intentions. We know information alone simply does not create behavior change in the majority of people. 

As humans, we often lack the necessary motivation and habit formation tools needed to take consistent, daily steps towards managing our health. While we intend to follow care plans and build healthier habits, the complexity of human motivation all too often stands in the way. 

The impact to our healthcare system & society at large 

Failure to comply with prescribed care plans is one of the costliest problems in healthcare, leading to diminished health outcomes and increased care utilization. 

In the U.S. alone, half of patients with chronic conditions do not adhere to their medications, resulting in $300B of preventable costs to the healthcare system a year. This problem is only getting worse, with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and COPD becoming more prevalent every year. 

While others have tried to boost adherence with technology, reminders, and coaching solutions, Wellth is a pioneer in applying the concepts of behavioral economics to create motivation and improve population health at scale. We empower people with chronic conditions to disrupt and unlearn unhealthy behaviors to produce dramatic results. 

Our Solution 

Wellth members receive financial incentives, nudges, and behavioral reinforcements to establish healthy, lasting habits. 

Once enrolled, members use Wellth’s platform to submit scheduled check-ins aligning with their care plans. Check-ins, typically completed daily, require users to submit a picture of their target behavior at a set time (e.g., medications placed in the palm of their hand, glucometer or blood pressure cuff readings). 

These check-ins are immediately processed by Wellth’s AI technology for verification, and insights can be relayed directly to care teams. Members get a fun, easy, motivating experience along with instant gratification in keeping their endowed daily amount, which they “cash out” at milestone intervals throughout the duration of their program. 

Wellth partners with health plans, risk-bearing providers and employers to improve the health of their members with chronic conditions, with 5 key outcomes: 

  • Increase care plan adherence 
  • Improve quality scores, such as STARS, NCQA, HEDIS
  • Reduce utilization and costs
  • Improve member satisfaction and CAHPS Survey Results 
  • Improve overall improving the health of our members

Our solution doesn’t require any IT integrations, so it can be implemented quickly with few resources required from our partners and work seamlessly with other solutions our partners have already implemented. We believe in our solution so much that we put our fees entirely at risk so our partners only pay when they achieve results. 

By utilizing the Wellth platform, our partners have seen results such as:

  • 45% reduction in readmission rate for patients who have had one or more heart attacks
  • 92% decrease in avoidable emergency department visits
  • 1.3 reduction in HbA1c levels amongst high-risk diabetics
  • 88 Net Promoter Score of 

To date, Wellth has predominantly focused on underserved and complex patient populations that tend to have the highest nonadherence rates and make up 80% or more of health care costs within a population.
